Abstract : A variational approach to isolating optimum particle trajectories in insertion devices is presented in this paper. The method is based on assigning performance functions to insertion devices which are functionals of the particle trajectory, and then extremizing the performance functions by varying the particle trajectory. A concrete example of general interest is solved, and an outline of extending the method to general cases is given.
