Abstract : A method is presented to simulate steady viscous flows by a zonal concept, where local solutions of the Navier Stokes equations are coupled with solutions of the Euler and the boundary layer equations. The basic idea is to solve the Navier Stokes equations only in those zones of the flowfield where strong interaction occurs. The overall goal is to reduce the computation costs. The governing equations and the coupling procedures are presented for general three dimensional viscous flows. Results are given from two-dimensional applications obtained with an alternating coupling scheme. Then a close coupling scheme is introduced. For this purpose a new relaxation approach for the implicit unfactored Euler and Navier-Stokes equations was implemented. The computed results demonstrated good capability for the close coupling approach.
