Abstract : O corporate wide zero defect wave soldering program, was begun, to control and eliminate defects originating from the soldering process. The zero defect philosophy has resulted in a major reduction of soldering defects and substantial cost savings. The attitude 'People are the Process' in conjunction with simple technical concepts were the contributing factors to a successful program. The building blocks of the zero defect concept were: 1. Creating a Zero Defect Soldering Culture; 2. Commitment from all Levels of Management, Engineering, and Production; 3. Simplifying the Wave Solder Process; and 4. Operator Involvement and Ownership. The benefits of this corporate program are; higher first pass yields, elimination of nonvalue added activities, and increased flow of work in process. Finally, the zero defect program exemplifies the dedication towards the company slogan 'Quality Means Business'.
