Abstract : Recent product developments are made in high density integrated circuits with Surface Mount Technology. High lead count (over 100), close pitch (0.025 inch) gate array components are employed to achieve overall system performance within the constraints of size, weight, and power. The placement of these components on dense printed circuit boards requires x and y positional accuracy of at least 0.003 inch in each coordinate which taxes normal human dexterity. A unique robotic placement system which overcomes this problem has recently been installed at Norden Systems and is currently being used to assemble such high density boards. Features of the system include: a. the use of two vision systems to eliminate the need for precision printed circuit board tooling holes and component alignment; b. improvement of basic robot positioning accuracy through the establishment of a two dimensional (x,y) correction data bank by the scanning of a precision optical grid; and c. direct entry of component placement data from the P.C. board developed CAD data eliminates the need for manual data entry or a placement position teaching procedure.
