Abstract : Recent advances in compounding technology have extended the utility of fluoropolymers to new application areas. The following technologies will be reviewed: (1) Statically conductive fluoropolymers formulated to perform as noise suppression layers in data transmission cables or to enhance the corona discharge resistance of high voltage cables. (2) Silicone IPN (Interpenetrating Polymer Networks) modified fluoropolymers that offer improved flexibility, coupled with excellent lubricity and processibility. (3) Flexibilized formulations to solve the problems associated with the use of fluoropolymers in plenum tight buffer fiber optic construction. (4) PTFE modified resins which offer low smoke generation properties along with lubricity and wear resistance. (5) Inorganic particulate filled fluoropolymers that enhance the inherently poor cut-through and abrasion resistance of fluoropolymer resins. (Author)
