Abstract : Two new sealing compounds have been developed for outside-plant equipment, such as splice cases or closures, which require oil resistance or fire resistance. The oil-resistant material improves the integrity of closure seals exposed to petroleum environments, such as in a man-hole containing gasoline. In addition, the oil-resistant compound is compatible with encapsulating materials, and eliminates messy re-entry of encapsulated buried plant. The fire-resistant material satisfies flammability requirements for building closures. To achieve such compounds, product requirements were developed to define the performance of sealing materials in these two environments. Test results include data relating to resistance to hydrocarbon solvents, mechanical characteristics, and fire resistance.
