Abstract : This paper details the results of an extensive testing program on various fiber cable types in order to fully qualify such cables for use in outside plant environmental extremes. Core structure alternatives, such as loose tube, or slotted core are compared in conjunction with fiber design differences (matched or depressed cladding), total performance of the cable being the major concern. Emphasis is placed on a discussion of the validity of various standard testing procedures and some novel test procedures are proposed to improve the practical significance of the qualification program. As an example a cyclical freeze thaw water penetration test is examined in detail and test results will be presented. Finally lightning resistance of various core and sheath designs is examined both from a theoretical and practical view point. Test data on cables subjected to a high voltage discharge together with a discussion of the failure mechanism will be presented. (Author)
