Abstract : The variables associated with an arc or 'sandbox' test for measuring lightning performance of cables were examined. A modified test procedure was devised which greatly facilitated the conduct of the test. The mechanism by which damage could occur to cables in this test was investigated. It was shown that water was not necessary for physical damage to occur--that generation of steam was not necessary. The mechanism by which an arc discharge causes damage to a cable in the sandbox test is related to the kinetic energy in the arc, the mechanical inertia of the test medium, and the attendant acoustic shockwave associated with discharge of the arc.
