Abstract : In principle, current single mode fiber has been optimally designed to achieve a specific system performance and to ensure a particular upgrade scenario. However, it is known that subtle differences in the various fiber design parameters can impact on not only the cable performance but also the outside plant technology and cable installation practices. As a result, the actual system performance cannot necessarily be anticipated from the current fiber specifications based on waveguide parameters. In order to understand the complex interplay among the many variables, theoretical calculations and experimental evaluations have been performed. The results of these optimization activities have provided us with a better understanding of the current single mode fiber/cable technology as well as the future evolution of this technology. The object of this paper is to summarize the design optimization process from a broad perspective. (Author)
