Abstract : Telecom Australia has planned an extensive long-haul single mode optical fibre network that makes extensive use of a direct burial installation technique. The cable pay-off system fitted to the tractors enables essentially zero tension installation of cables with small tensile strength. That allows designs that have a small diameter, are lightweight, and are installable in lengths in excess of 5 km. This paper describes in detail the field performance thus far of the developed cable design and installation technique on a major trunk route. The design of future long haul systems is also considered, and a newly developed statistical approach for repeater section design described. The advantage of this statistical design approach, combined with the efficiency of direct burial installation of the non-metallic cable design, leads to an extremely economic single mode optical fibre long-haul network.
