Abstract : This paper outlines the major safety considerations for the operation of a thermal destructor unit utilized to incinerate 3 x items previously contaminated by Chemical Surety Materiel (CSM). The portions of the operation of the thermal destructor unit which will be evaluated from a safety standpoint in this paper are the receipt/storage of 3 x material, the loading of the firepan, the actual operation of the unit, and the disposition of the 5 x waste and ash. This paper will also outline the engineering controls utilized to ensure that the thermal destructor unit is operating in compliance with all environmental requirements.
