Abstract : Before a SCAMP-Type hopper could be used to load a 5.56-mm blank round with propellant WC-814, it was necessary to determine the maximum quantity of the propellant that could be used in the hopper without yielding a burning-to-explosion transition. A hopper was tested in a remote area with 60, 110, 160, and 210 lb of propellant; five tests were conducted at each weight level. None of the tests resulted in an explosion or detonation after the propellant was ignited. In all of the tests the propellant did burn, causing damage to the vent pipe and sometimes the hopper.
