Abstract : The nearshore and tideflats area of Commencement Bay, Washington, has been designated as a national priority site for Federal cleanup under the US Superfund law. Designation of the site was based on the presence of widespread contamination resulting from a copper smelter, four chemical manufacturing plants, two refineries, a pulp mill, a municipal treatment plant, and numerous waste disposal sites. By agreement with the Federal government, the State of Washington, Department of Ecology (WDE), is acting as lead agency in the remedial investigations of the site. By agreement with WDE, the Seattle District, US Army Corps of Engineers, conducted an evaluation of alternative dredging methods and equipment, disposal methods and sites, site control and treatment practices for contaminated sediments from the bay nearshore area.
