Abstract : Guide vane profiles with transonic flow regions in the flow field have been developed for a high loaded one stage axial turbine. The profiles were designed in two different ways: first, using standard design techniques and second, using an inverse design method, where the profile shape is computed from prescribed velocity distributions (PVD). The results of both design methods will be presented. Comparison is made by using another computer program system to calculate the velocity distributions in the flow field, the boundary layer parameters, and the profile losses. The computed results of our first application of an inverse design method on axial turbine guide vanes show that improvements can be made.
