Abstract : With regard to maximum efficiency of gas turbine compressors, small blade tip clearances during all engine operating conditions should be achieved. In order to determine the tip clearance during compressor tests, a reliable measuring technique has been developed at MTU. Using this temperature-insensitive capacitive probe system (Coulomb system), tip clearance can be monitored even during fast transient conditions. The sensors of the multichannel equipment can operate up to high temperatures without cooling. Application to compressor testing is described in two examples; a high-speed centrifugal compressor rig and the intermediate-pressure compressor of a jet engine.
