Abstract : Today most geostationary satellites are built to tolerate occasional upsets of their electronic circuits and the additional degradation of their thermal surfaces caused by electrostatic discharges. Only those spacecraft which experienced a significant impact on their payload use received the necessary resources to advance the electrostatic of subsequent models. ESA's telecommunications satellite programme benefited from such an experience and can now demonstrate in orbit that electrostatic immunity of geostationary is achievable. Still, effort has to continue to solve some outstanding questions for which the development of new antistatic materials and technologies would help.
