Abstract : Fading due to multipath propagation is frequency-selective. Given a wideband measurement of the channel transfer-function, it is of interest to estimate the delays and amplitudes of the multipath rays. Fourier techniques suffer from limited resolution and sidelobes. Alternative parametric methods are available and one, the Prony algorithm, has been used in this research. The algorithm has been tested against a database of laboratory-generated fades involving known delays and amplitudes. The capabilities and limitations of the method are outlined. Results obtained using real in-the-field measurements are illustrated and discussed as are the areas of applicability of this approach.
