Abstract : An Avionics architecture exploiting high speed, high density VLSI and VHSIC technology by repartitioning the traditional avionics suite requires subsystem interconnection via backbone and backplane buses and networks operating at data rates far exceeding those used for avionics in the past. In fact, the rates are high enough that fiber optics is the only interconnect technology that does not impose substantial size, weight, and life cycle cost penalties on the overall system. In the Pave Pillar architecture the fiber optic multiplex bus for command and control, block transfer, and flight control functions, based on a variation of the IEEE 802.4 and 802.2 token-passing bus protocol for the physical and data link layers, operates at 50 Mbps. A number of specific implementations have emerged. The parallel internal (PI) bus protocol ties users (data processors) together in the backplane and through a bus interface unit to the multiplex bus. Other kinds of networks are used to serve subsystems connecting video terminals, sensors, signal processors, etc. This paper presents an overview of the multiplexed high-speed data bus and parallel internal backplane bus designs and their interface. The implementation details and options for the fiber optic network which supports the interconnection of avionics bus interface modules in different physical locations are discussed. Passive and active star-coupled networks are compared and conclusions drawn. The state of the art in packaging of the avionics bus interface and related line replaceable modules is illustrated.
