Abstract : Visual displays play an important role in the cockpit, where the information coming from various sensors is presented to the aircrew, after processing by computers. A classification of the displays is done, considering the needs in modern cockpit architecture, where different systems are possible according to the mission envisaged. For daylight operations, HMD/s or FLIR systems are considered, with their advantages but also their shortcomings and limitations. For night operations, NVG, LLLTV or FLIR systems are assessed, and the current problems discussed. The protection of the eyes of the aircrew against intense sources of light, such as laser or nuclear flash, is also considered briefly.
