Abstract : Rayleigh-Benard convection is one of the simplest instabilities. It is related to the case of a horizontal layer of a thermally expansive fluid which is confined above and below by rigid plates of good thermal conductivity, submitted to purely vertical adverse thermal gradient (adverse means 'heated from below'). Topics include: Basic concepts about dissipative dynamical systems; Towards deterministic turbulence or chaos; and Some experimental illustrations.
