Abstract : Because of an ever growing number of publications, and ever dwindling economic resources, those who work in the information community have always seen the need to share the sharing and exchange of bibliographic records feasible. Throughout this period, standards for descriptive cataloguing have been refined so that the records being exchanged will be compatible. Based on these standard machine readable records, both libraries and the abstracting/indexing communities have developed various formal exchange formats. This paper presents an overview of the development of standardized bibliographic processing from the first cataloguing rules through to computer exchange formats. Use of these standards by the Defence and Aerospace community is examined with particular emphasis on the treatment of technical reports.
