Abstract : Most operating radar systems don't provide sufficient range resolution to resolve flying targets in range direction. Nevertheless, high cross range resolution can be obtained by 1-D ISAR imaging. This procedure will be successful only, if the target motion is compensated with a high accuracy. In this paper, a motion compensation technique is introduced based on Kalman forward-backward-smoothing on radar position estimates together with spectral information. An iterative error correction procedure (autofocus) yields a cross range image with sufficient resolution. Correct scaling and estimation of the imaging axis direction are derived from the flight path by a simple orientation model.
