Abstract : This paper describes experiments to determine the characteristics of the vortices shed from a submarine-like body of revolution at an angle of attack in a turn. The experiments used a new type of vorticity probe developed by Freestone at the City University in the United Kingdom. The probe allows the streamwise vorticity to be estimated form simple pressure measurements and rapid assessments of vortex position and strength can be made. The paper examines the expected performance of the probe using a simulation of an ideal viscous cored vortex and reports experience gained in the design and preliminary testing of the probe. Results of experiments to measure the vortex shed by a hydroplane at an angle of attack and a body of revolution in a turn are reported.
