Abstract : This paper focuses on design requirements stemming from civil operators. The offshore oil and gas industry is and will continue to be the main application of civil helicopters. Development of other commercial market will require major improvements in almost all areas. Some of these areas are highlighted here: safety, reliability, cockpit ergonomics, vibration for example. The current rate of progress is considered much too slow and concern is expressed about military and civil requirements drifting apart. The current situation calls for ambitious goals to be attained in commercial helicopters before the turn of the century. Designers of new military helicopters currently on the drawing board should be aware of these civil requirements and take them into account as much as possible. NATO.
