Abstract : Starting with the description of the different design principles of articulated, see-saw, hingeless and bearingless rotor concepts, a variety of realised constructions is presented and discussed. The flight mechanic aspects such as maneuverability and handling qualities of these different concepts are explained with respect to their operational capabilities. In particular, the differences in the flapping hinge offset are discussed which have significant influence on helicopter controllability. The trend of the flapping hinge offset over the last three decades of armed and utility helicopters is analysed. Supplementary to this the improvements in maintainability and reliability are discussed by the increasing simplification of the recent rotor hub designs obtained by the reduction in weight and the lower number of parts.
