Abstract : This paper discusses the representation and simulation of clutter textures in coherent scattering in terms of a correlated noise model. Initially expressions for the detected intensity when coherent radiation is scattered from a surface with fluctuating cross-section are derived demonstrating how the effects of surface statistics and correlation properties interact with the imaging function. Secondly, a model for the cross-section fluctuations based on negative-binomial or gamma-distributed statistics is proposed. When coherent radiation is scattered by a surface with these properties the resulting intensity distribution can be shown to be K distributed. Having derived theoretical predictions for the correlated noise model with a variety of spectral forms a texture simulation technique is proposed based on linear filtering which duplicates the two-point correlation properties of the observed intensity. Finally, a comparison of original image data, simulated textures and the theoretical model is made for a number of examples of differing textures of both natural and manmade clutter. (Author)
