Abstract : A screening smoke tactical decision aid (TDA) is being developed to help the battlefield commander choose which of his available smoke assets would be the most favorable for achieving his objectives for the expected tactical and environmental situation. Knowledge-based artificial intelligence techniques will be used to determine the relative ranking of the smoke assets based on a variety of tactical and environmental factors. TDA input will consist of a list of available assets and meteorological data for the time and area of interest. Information will also be input concerning the scenario, such as the intended use of the smoke and terrain-related information. A number of independent factors will be considered and each available smoke asset will be ranked as ideal, favorable, marginal, or unfavorable for each of these factors. An overall ranking will then be derived for each smoke type. TDA output will consist of the relative rankings of the assets, information concerning why the use of certain assets may not be favorable, and warnings concerning possible toxic effects on one's own troops.
