Abstract : The paper examines the prospects for major advances in gas turbine engine component technology over the next 20 years. For future military engines and aircraft, these advances could lead to considerably higher thrust/weight ratios than are currently available. The gains in engine performance resulting from various specific technology advances are outlined and their impact on the sizing and performance of a typical combat aircraft are considered. In conjunction with these future projections, an examination is also made of the influences of main engine cycle parameters, such as overall pressure ratio, bypass ratio, and rating philosophy on the mass and performance of the aircraft/engine combination.
