Abstract : The usual surge suppression regulation is realized by integration of a fixed limit-line into the regulation system at a safe distance to the stability limit of the compressor. Since additional reserves for deterioration or fouling have to be included, an interesting part of the characteristic field with high efficiency is excluded so from practical use. With appropriate means for detection of the onset of stall and surge and by fast response of the guide vane adjustment an adaptive system for surge suppression could be realized, which takes into account the actual state of the compressor. Experimental results for stall detection and for different modes of guide vane adjustment are presented. A six-stage axial compressor is equipped with fast acting guide vane adjustment in all stages. First experimental results are presented.
