Abstract : This paper will describe the most significant improvement to the United Kingdom's Military Air Transport Force in recent years. That is the procurement of the Lockheed L1011 Tristar aircraft into RAF service. The reasons behind the introduction of the Tristar, and its subsequent modification into three very capable tanker, freighter and passenger carrying variants will be outlined. Moreover, some of the aircraft's capabilities and drawbacks will be discussed. In addition, and with a view to the future, some of the cost disadvantages of an aging air transport fleet will be considered. Furthermore, the RAF approach to considering a timescale for the introduction of a possible replacement transport aircraft will be presented.
