Abstract : Both a simple lest particle approach and a complete kinetic calculation are used to predict the net electron production rate of an RF signal under conditions appropriate for an Artificial Ionospheric Mirror (AIM) system These predictions are compared with each other and with experimental data and found to be in good agreement. The test particle based formula is incorporated into a model which calculates the one-dimensional vertical electron density profile created by a ground-based RF heater, and the performance of a baseline heater design is investigated, providing the foundation for the specification of a baseline AIM heater system.
