Abstract : The different methods used in the Medical Centre of Aerospace Medicine, Brussels (Med C Aerospace) to detect allergy in pilot applicants, are discussed. During the period 1987 until 1989 included, the Total Immunoglobuline E (IgE) levels were also determined at the start of pilot training. The aim was to assess if Total IgE could be used as an additional selection criterion. We conclude that it is not useful to determine the Total IgE in the selection of pilot candidates. The existing investigations and examination methods are sufficient to detect allergy.
