Abstract : Problems involving nonconvex energies where the equilibrium configuration may involve several phases have received alot of attention in recent years. We begin studying an evolution problem modeling the deformations of a simple viscoelastic material and a nonconvex energy. We show that the approximate solution given by a standard finite element method will converge at an optimal rate to the true solution. Through numerical computations we start to explore the long time behavior.
