Abstract : The effect of the interaction of fluids and the environment on composite fibre/resin systems plays an important role in determining the suitability and the design values used for these materials. This paper provides a brief overview of the questions posed by the designer and the materials engineer and looks at the test methodologies employed to determine answers to these questions. The advantages for standardization of these fluid/environment exposure regimes, together with agreement on the range and extent of the follow-up test methods, is examined.
