Abstract : The behaviour of an advanced toughened epoxy resin/carbon fiber composite material, Hercules AS-4/8552, in contact with fuel has been studied. Interlaminar shear strength and compression strength tests were performed on unidirectional specimens after being exposed at 70 deg C to several conditions, including a combined exposure to JP8 and water. A correlation between the fluid content (either fuel, water or a mixture of both) and the drop in the mechanical properties was found. However, tests performed on multidirectional specimens immersed in several JP8/additives mixtures and subjected to thermal cycles showed no variation in the interlaminar shear strength values. The exposure to fuel or to fuel/additives mixtures of impacted samples was found not to produce any effect in the damage size or detectability. Fuel leakage tests were conducted on impacted panels subjected to pressure and results are presented. Finally, the growth of microorganisms in fuel/water solutions seemed not to affect the material properties, as deduced from some mechanical and microscopy studies carried out on samples exposed to such mixture.
