Abstract : Since 1974, the Osaka Port and Harbor Bureau has removed organic sludge totaling more than 3 million cubic meters and disposed of it at the North Port disposal area. As this is a sea reclamation disposal area, water quality control and discharged water quality improvement are important in terms of environmental preservation. The present survey has-clarified the following points: (a) Water quality at a disposal area is affected by the seawater contained in the dredged soil, meteorological conditions (water temperature, precipitation, sunlight, etc and proliferation of phytoplankton. (b) When a disposal area occupies a wide area, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) value, which is the typical index of pollution, remains low while the water is deep, but will rise rapidly as the water depth becomes shallower, due to shortened residence time of discharged water and proliferation of phytoplankton. (c) Remarkable improvement in discharged water quality can be achieved by installing pollution-prevention membranes directly in front of the water discharge outlets.
