Abstract : Simulators are currently build as simple system 'look-a-likes' and a structured or experimentally validated approach to their use and implementation as part of a comprehensive training system is lacking. This is one reason why their use in training has not always been as successful as expected. Training time in an aircraft can be reduced to a certain extent, but most often at the cost of increasing total time due to imperfect transfer ratios. The other reason for limited success is that objective and validated indices for performance are rarely available which complicates both the definition of measurable training objectives and the empirical identification of task characteristics critical for skill development. Without objective indices, the issue of 'fidelity' versus 'validity' remains unresolved.
