Abstract : The German Government has initiated a three phase program to evaluate the use of an improved simulator for the Tornado aircraft. In the first phase of this program CAE has built a prototype simulator, referred to as the Evaluation Unit (EU). The improvements in the EU consist of visual system upgrades to provide a CAE Fibre-Optic Helmet Mounted display (FOHMD) for the pilot and weapon system officer (WSO), with imagery from an Evans and Sutherland ESIG-1000 image generator, as well as a six-degrees of freedom (DOF) motion system. The EU has been installed at CAE Electronics GmbH in Stolberg, Germany. Military and industrial representatives are conducting an evaluation, under responsibility to Bundesamt fur Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung (BWB), of the upgraded simulator to assess its capability to provide high speed, low level, tactical flight operations training capability. A factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) design is begin used to assess objectively recorded performance data and subjective impressions data collected during simulator flights by military crews from the German Air Force and Navy.
