Abstract : This paper describes a development tool called 'Virtual Cockpit' which is used at Deutsche Airbus. The following aspects are discussed: A comparison of civil and military transport aircraft developments shows a significant shows a significant technology gap on the military tactical transport side during the last 30 years. Therefore, it seems very beneficial to consider a 'dual use' of well-proven 'civil technologies' for military applications. Specific military transport missions require aircraft capabilities, some of which are quite new and therefore challenging for transport aircraft Ie.g. low-level flight profiles in night and poor-visibility conditions). The demonstrations of the feasibility and an evaluation of technical solutions imply the need for suitable development tools. The Virtual Cockpit is explained in terms of its components (hardware/software), features and capabilities. A major field of investigation in this context is the aircraft systems' central control and monitoring.
