Abstract : This study examined the interrelationship of student attitudes toward goal interdependence (GI) characterizations of competitive and cooperative educational settings. Consistent with goal interdependence theory, a low positive correlation was found between attitudes of competition and cooperation. Student need for social comparison was positively correlated with student attitudes of competition and cooperation. Student helpfulness attitudes were unrelated to attitudes of competition and strongly and positively correlated with cooperation. Implications for education are discussed.
