Abstract : In prior research, moving form perception tended to be nonveridical when the update rate of an image generator was less than the refresh rate of the display device. In this experiment, we examined the effect of update rate on the range at which pilots could identify moving aircraft models. The results indicate that target identification range is greater for a 60 Hz update rate than for a 30 Hz update rate. Methodological issues and flight simulation design implications are discussed.
