Abstract : Squeezed light allows suitable optical systems to perform at below the standard shot-noise level. Below shot-noise performance of optical interferometers employing squeezed light has been demonstrated in the laboratory and it is clear that squeezed state enhanced microscopes and spectrometers could be constructed. There is also considerable interest in the issue of whether optical communications systems could benefit from the use of squeezed light. In fact, much of the early work on squeezed light was motivated by quantum communications issues, particularly those involving coherent communication.
