Abstract : We report both theoretical calculations and experimental observations of second harmonic (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in long scale-length underdense plasmas. Second harmonic generation, normally forbidden in a uniform plasma, is allowed by a radial electron density profile that results from the laser-intensity dependent ionization. Experimental measurements of the scaling of the harmonics with density and laser intensity are presented.
