Abstract : Studies of the interaction of molecules and solids with subpicosecond (approx. 600 fs) high intensity radiation (> or = 10 to the 16th W/sq. cm.) are leading to the observation of new physical phenomena and the production of new classes of highly excited matter. The experiments indicate that a central factor is the ability to generate very high levels of electronic excitation in a manner which enables the heavy bodies of the system to remain kinetically cold for the time scale of the interaction.
