Abstract : We have demonstrated that high-intensity sub-picosecond laser pulses can be efficiently absorbed by a dilute solid material. We have measured laser reflectivities as low as 10% from certain targets, in contrast to the 90% reflectivity observed from flat solid surfaces. The hot plasmas generated on dilute solids exhibit greatly increased x-ray emission due to the enhanced laser absorption. Laser-to-x-ray conversion efficiency greater than 1% have been observed for x-ray energies above 1keV.
