Abstract : Conventional statistics packages such as S 3 or SAS 10, have a limited choice of data structures for representing statistical datasets. In particular, for an operation to be invoked on a dataset or a subset of the data, the data has first to be converted to a specific format, typically 1-d or 2-d arrays. This leads to confusion for the analyst who ends up having to juggle many versions of the same data. In addition the analyst has to remember the connections between the different versions, and connections between analysis results and the original data.
