Abstract : Analytical problems in a number of scientific disciplines concern comparisons of two sets of distances among labelled points. These two sets of distances (or metrics) correspond to different Euclidean representations of the points. The comparison between these two sets of distances, or between the two configurations of points in space, is often expressed best in terms of a deformation that maps the set of labelled points in one representation into the corresponding set in the second representation. In this paper we discuss the computation and interpretation of these deformations for two particular fields of application and the visualization of these deformations using the graphical technique of biorthogonal grids (Bookstein 1978).
