Abstract : Full azimuth scanning of a high gain horizon beam has often been accomplished by mechanical rotation of a large aperture. From an airborne platform point-of-view, doing the same job with a single electronically steered aperture would be desirable. This paper presents the results of an experimental development at Ball Communications Systems Division (BCSD), where an arrangement of active and parasitic elements in a large circular array resulted in a high gain beam near the horizon. It is shown that electronic control and reconfigurability of the active and parasitic elements allows full 360-degree azimuth steering, along with a limited scan capability in elevation.
