Abstract : Several materials and methods are investigated in the search for devices for efficient frequency doubling of infra-red diode lasers to blue. Such compact light sources would find important applications in i.e. optical data storage, displays and spectroscopy. For efficient second harmonic generation (SHG), the phase-matching condition must be fulfilled. In the quasi-phase-matching (QPM) scheme, phase matching is accomplished by periodic modulation of the nonlinear properties of the material. Quasi-phase-matched SHG of blue light in waveguides has been demonstrated in lithium niobate, in polymers and recently very encouraging results have been obtained in KTP. Lately there have also been reports on quasi-phase-matched SHG of blue light in lithium tantalate waveguides.
