Abstract : A Microwave Thermogravimetric Analyzer (MTGA) has been constructed, which allows for the measurement of weight change of a sample located within a 2.45 GHz microwave cavity, as a function of temperature. Samples in the powdered or compact form, are heated by microwave hybrid heating (MHH). These samples are placed inside an inert holder and subjected to a known reproducible thermal profile, which allows the material to be characterized. Changes in sample weight may occur due to oxidation, decomposition, reduction, volatilization, sublimation and/or reactions within the sample. Results of a binder removal study and the MTGA will be discussed.
